After some time, any furniture loses its original appearance. Almost all types of furniture have the property of rapid wear. Cabinets, tables, chests of drawers and more are less likely to wear out.
However, the most wear-resistant type of furniture is undoubtedly the chairs, since we use them much more than the rest of the furniture. The body of the chair itself does not wear out so quickly, and not so much, whether the seat and backrest are upholstered.
So many will certainly decide to get rid of old and shabby furniture, but doing this is completely not worth it, since you can restore any old thing yourself.
In order to perform high-quality decor of a wooden chair, you must have the necessary material and tools, as well as have certain skills in the repair of furniture, well, have a great imagination.
The main types of fabrics
Before starting work, you need to determine the type and color of fabric that will be installed on the seats, as well as on the back of the chair. Many experts advise using only the most reliable fabric in such work.
For the restoration and decoration of old and damaged chairs, it is preferable to use a durable fabric based on tapestry, which includes 100% cotton and artificial fibers.
This material is considered quite strong and durable, it has increased resistance to wear. The main advantage of a tapestry is its fibers, which have a direction on the one hand.
But for the restoration of old or rare furniture, it is advisable to use special silk for furniture. The basis of this fabric has artificial fibers. And in appearance it looks very attractive and original. Chairs pulled in silk will not leave anyone indifferent, as they will have a chic and rich look.
When restoring antique antique chairs, you must use jacquard fabric. This is one of the most expensive and unusually beautiful materials hauling chairs. However, some old chairs are decorated with modern materials, such as arpatek and microfiber. The main advantage of these types of fabrics is their impeccable classic elegance.
Decoration process
Before you begin the process of decorating an old and shabby chair, you will have to stock up on everything you need:
- upholstery
- the seat will need foam and canvas
- decorative cord
But in the process of decorating you will need to use the necessary tools:
- joinery set for work
- pliers and knife
- construction stapler
- several types of sandpaper
- furniture glue
- thin section machine
- hammer or wooden mallet
Before the restoration of any stool, it must be carefully examined, and to find out the degree of wear and deformation. In some moments, to restore a damaged stool, not significant efforts will be required to restore it.
In this case, damaged parts can be fastened with special mounting corners having the desired dimensions. It is worth noting that even a small restoration will require to disassemble the whole chair and disconnect all its components.
At the same time, each part of the chair must be restored separately. For more efficient and long-term operation of the chair, it is necessary to use dense and reliable components for connection.
Remove the entire cover from the chair using the entire machine thinner or sandpaper. Then, you need to put together the whole structure, using a wooden mallet and a special furniture adhesive, it is advisable to use PVA glue.
Seat trim
Many modern chairs have a removable type seat, so this design will have to work outside the box. However, in other cases, the decoration of chairs must be done on the design of the chair.
Next, you need to stock up on foam rubber, from which a soft and comfortable seat will ultimately be made. The dimensions of this element must be exactly the same with your frame and deviations are not permissible. At the same time, most experts believe that the thickness of the foam should be selected individually.
After that, you need to make a canvas out of batting that will have all the basic and necessary dimensions of the “seat” of your chair. However, in this case, you need to leave on each side a place of about five centimeters for fastening using stapler brackets. After that, it is necessary to mark the fabric for subsequent upholstery. Its size should be identical to the batting sheet.
Foam can be safely laid on the seat prepared for the seat, after which it is necessary to fasten the batting prepared in size to the seat, carefully removing the excess parts with a sharp knife. Using a stapler, the upholstery is upholstered around the entire contour of the frame; it is advisable to prevent the formation of various folds and flaws and tubercles.
The staples are nailed in several rows around the perimeter of the “seat”. Upholstery fabric is not advisable to tighten it tightly, as this can cause rapid deformation of the foam rubber, and this will lead to premature wear of the chair seat.
Backrest recovery
To make the seatback very soft and comfortable it is necessary to use a sealed type of cardboard or a thin plywood sheet with exact and similar dimensions.
At the same time, plywood and foam should also have the exact dimensions of the back of the chair. But batting and upholstery during installation should have a small release tolerance of about five centimeters, but no more.
Also, for the decor of the back of the chair, you need to install a pre-selected fabric for upholstery. It is pulled face down, a blank of plywood is installed on its upper part.
Next, on this surface, you need to install a sheet of batting and foam prepared in size, after which upholstery fabric is stretched on them. All this, securely fixed using special brackets.
The entire finished surface should not have any roughness, flaws and tubercles, it should be perfectly smooth and even, and all excess should be cut with a knife. After that, to process along the entire perimeter of the seat and back, with the help of a braid or cord we hide all visible seams.
