STRETCH CEILINGS - FROM SOURCES TO THE PRESENT

The story of the stretch ceiling began in ancient times. Already in those days, in ancient Rome and Greece, dyed silk was used to decorate the ceilings, the color of which harmonized and complemented the main interior of the room.

In those days, dyes for fabrics had insufficient resistance to external factors, which led to rapid fading of the fabric and sagging fabric. Therefore, dyeing fabric and ceiling installation had to be repeated quite often. In the countries of the East, a similar technology was used to decorate the ceiling. Only instead of silk was a cotton fabric used, which was pre-impregnated with a solution consisting of water and chalk. And the installation of the ceiling was carried out on a pre-mounted frame. When dried, the surface of the fabric turned out to be well stretched and fairly smooth. And with this technology, there were drawbacks. Shedding of chalk occurred very soon, which required the dismantling of the tissue and repeated operations.

In some countries of the East and now use this technology. The difference is in the use of the coloring matter, the chalk is replaced with acrylic paints. The twentieth century was marked by the discovery of polymers. And since progress applies to all areas of human life, the technology of suspended ceilings has moved to a new stage. Rubber, film and paint coatings, plastic are polymeric materials that are based on high molecular weight compounds. Thus, on the basis of polymers, a polyvinyl chloride film was created, which later became used for the manufacture of stretch ceiling ceilings. High operational and technological characteristics of polyvinyl chloride film allow the production and installation of stretch ceilings of various colors and textures, with a long service life. The technology, which is currently used to manufacture the canvas and mount the suspended ceiling, was developed by specialists of the French company Barrisol back in the sixties of the twentieth century. Now finishing stretch ceilings are made not only at home, they are also widely used in offices, medical and commercial institutions, etc. The technology for installing suspended ceilings has also undergone changes. Currently, installation is carried out using special aluminum profiles and heating with hot air.
